AAP Council on School Health (COSH) Revised AAP Policy Statement – Corporal Punishment in Schools
The American Academy of Pediatrics has an updated policy statement in the September 2023 Pediatrics (published online August 21) renouncing corporal punishment as a school practice. The new report gives evidence to support the recommendation that adults use healthy forms of discipline, such as positive reinforcement of appropriate behaviors, setting limits, redirecting, and offering future expectations to children. The revised Policy Statement titled “Corporal Punishment in Schools” is authored by the AAP Council on School Health with Mandy Allison, MD, MSPH, MEd, FAAP, Nathaniel Beers, MD, MPA, FAAP, and Jaime Peterson, MD, MPH, FAAP serving as lead authors.
