Beyond the Walls: Activities for the Outdoors

By Nirja Shah

The outdoor space can provide many different opportunities for teaching and learning while developing an appreciation and respect for the outdoors. This resource includes videos and elementary and secondary activity cards tailored for the different physical activity opportunities available throughout the school day and across the school year.

The activities facilitate opportunities to support development of social-emotional learning and living skills through small-sided, modified, and low organizational games, and the Welcome to Winter seasonal video series includes:

  • Safety considerations including dressing for the weather, and different playing surfaces and areas
  • Outdoor connections including environmental stewardship, Land-Based Learning, and educator prompts and guiding questions
  • Inclusive approaches for students with cognitive and physical disabilities
