Food Allergy Trends Reinforce the Critical Role of School Nurses

By Nirja Shah

FARE’s National Indicator Report on Food Allergy highlights the growing prevalence, workforce shortages, economic burden, and persistent treatment gaps that impact individuals and communities. In schools, these challenges directly affect student health and safety, placing school nurses at the forefront of prevention and emergency response. NASN allergy and anaphylaxis resources offer best-practice recommendations and strategies to support high-quality care for school-aged children at risk for allergic reactions and anaphylaxis.

Resource Highlights: NASN’s Allergy and Anaphylaxis Toolkit offers tools, sample forms, and guidance for policy, assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation to support safe, evidence-based school nursing practice. The accompanying NCPD activity (1.0 contact hour) strengthens practice by focusing on evidence-based care, toolkit integration, and implementation planning for the upcoming school year.
