Game On! Promoting Holistic Student Development in Sport Education Using a Hybrid Model Approach

According to SHAPE America, sport-oriented content is commonly included in physical education (PE) and can be used to promote important educational processes and outcomes (Farias et al., 2018). Too often, however, sport-oriented PE units are taught using a multi-activity, exposure- oriented approach. Typically this type of approach is incongruent with national standards, lacks a developmental perspective, and does not adequately infuse the most desirable elements of the larger sporting culture into the instructional context (Siedentop et al., 2020). Such an approach falls short of capitalizing on the educational potential of sport-oriented content and can leave students and teachers discouraged with the pedagogical process and disenchanted with the content. Fortunately, a variety of well-established model-based approaches exist, many of which are hybrids that aim to address the limitations associated with traditional, multi-activity teaching approaches (Fernández-Río & Iglesias, 2024).
